GCN in Copenhagen: US Recovery Act to create 900,000 new clean-energy jobs

US Vice President Joe Biden today released a report outlining the progress made in advancing clean energy investments and creating jobs by the Obama Administration since taking office.

The document, Progress Report: Transformation to a Clean Energy Economy, suggests that the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act is "laying the foundation for a clean energy economy that will create a new generation of jobs, reduce dependence on oil and enhance national security".

Just three programs with $29 billion in spending will leverage an additional $52 billion in private investments and create nearly 900,000 jobs, according to the report. This would reduce the number of unemployed workers by 6 percent, and lower the overall unemployment rate from 10 percent to 9.4 percent.

Last week, the GCN released a report into the low-carbon opportunities on offer from the transition to a low-carbon economy. It found that in the US, as many as 1.7 million net new jobs could be created as a result of both the US stimulus package and the American Clean Energy and Security Act passed last summer.
